When the State of Michigan privatized its distribution of spirits in January 1997, NWS Michigan, Inc., became the largest of three Authorized Distribution Agents (ADAs) in the state. Exclusive arrangements were successfully negotiated with major spirits suppliers in Michigan. In 1999, the Company acquired broker R.M. Gilligan and entered the spirits brokerage business.

The Company further expanded in Michigan when it purchased L&L Wine World in March 2007 and subsequently acquired rights to the majority of the AHD Wine Vintners portfolio in June 2007. These transactions have made the Company a strong and growth-oriented competitor in the Michigan wine market. NWS sells wine in Michigan through two divisions: NWS Wine World and Michigan Wine Merchants, the latter of which focuses on the fine wine segment of the market.

Headquarters for the Michigan companies and the main warehouse are located in Brownstown near Detroit. Other facilities include the wine sales office in Madison Heights; a hyper-terminal and office in Grand Rapids; a warehouse and office in Escanaba; and terminals in Traverse City and Saginaw. The companies employ 553 Michigan residents.

The Michigan operation includes a fleet of over 110 vehicles, including straight trucks, semi-tractor trailers and vans. An average of 15,000 cases a night is processed in Brownstown, and 5,000 cases are handled nightly in Grand Rapids. The product is delivered to approximately 15,000 customers statewide and represents the largest spirits volume and the third largest wine volume in the state.
